Peatlands are vital carbon stores, biodiversity hotspots, and a key focus for environmental policy and funding. Whether you’re working towards regulatory compliance, planning restoration, or managing operations in peat-rich areas, this specialist 1-day, field-based course will give you the practical skills and confidence to survey, assess, and plan effectively. With limited spaces for hands-on learning, early booking is recommended.
1. Identifying key peatland plant species in a variety of conditions:
Learn to confidently recognise the indicator species that define peatland habitats, even in challenging or degraded sites.
2. Measuring and recording peat depth accurately:
Gain hands-on experience using field tools and techniques to collect reliable peat depth data for surveys and reports.
3. Understanding peatland ecology and hydrology:
Build a clear picture of how water, vegetation, and soil interact to create and sustain healthy peatland ecosystems.
4. Linking assessments to compliance and restoration strategies:
Understand how survey results feed into meeting regulatory requirements and planning effective restoration projects.
5. Recognising threats to peatland health and how to address them:
Develop the skills to spot early signs of damage or degradation and explore practical interventions to protect these sensitive habitats.
By the end of the course, you will:
Learn to spot and correctly identify the plant species that reveal the health and status of peatland habitats.
Master practical field techniques for taking precise peat depth measurements and recording them for professional use.
Develop the ability to analyse survey findings and translate them into actionable management or restoration strategies.
Explore how healthy peatlands store carbon, regulate water, and support unique wildlife.
Gain the know-how to produce assessments that satisfy compliance checks and strengthen funding applications.
Peatlands are one of the UK’s most valuable natural assets—but also among the most fragile. This course gives you the skills to assess their condition with accuracy and confidence, ensuring your projects are both compliant and effective. Whether you’re supporting restoration work or managing operations in peat-rich areas, you’ll leave ready to make informed, practical decisions.
