Soil Assessment for Successful Woodland Establishment: Understanding Soils for Better Woodlands

Successful woodland creation starts below ground. While species choice, planting design, and management are all important, the condition and characteristics of the soil often determine whether a woodland thrives or struggles. Give your woodland its best shot at success, whatever the weather.

Course Overview

In this intensive 3 day course, we'll delve deep into the world of soil, and it influences woodland

1.   Learn how to identify and classify soils commonly encountered on woodland creation sites.

2. Understand how soil characteristics influence species suitability, rooting, drainage, productivity, and resilience.

3. Develop practical field skills for soil assessment and recording.

4. Identify common constraints to successful woodland establishment and explore mitigation options.

5. Apply soil assessment findings to woodland creation design, species selection, and management planning.

Learning Outcomes and Benefits:

By the end of this course, you'll emerge with a profound understanding of soil dynamics in forestry, equipped with practical skills to revolutionise your approach. Here's what you can expect:

Confidently assess soils in the field:

Use practical surveying techniques to identify soil types, horizons, drainage characteristics, and site limitations.

Master Soil Classification:

Navigate the Forestry Commission classification system with confidence, empowering you to identify and the main soil groups effectively.

Enhanced Tree Health:

Gain insights into the critical role soil plays in tree health, enabling you to nurture resilient forests, reducing reliance on fertilizers and enhancing sustainability.

Refined Species Selection:

Fine-tune your tree species selection for woodland creation projects, aligning choices with soil characteristics to foster long-term success.

Identify risks to successful establishment:

Recognise factors such as compaction, poor drainage, drought-prone soils, nutrient limitations, and exposure that may affect planting success.

Improve woodland creation planning:

Use soil information to support site design, planting specifications, management prescriptions, and funding applications.

Advise clients and stakeholders with confidence:

Communicate soil-related opportunities and constraints clearly and provide evidence-based recommendations.
